Probabilistic, Safety-Explicit, Reliability-Based Road Design
Dr. Yasser Hassan, Carleton University, Canada
Dr. Yasser Hassan is a Full Professor and the Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carleton University (on sabbatical for the academic year 2023-2024). His areas of expertise include modelling of roadway alignments; three-dimensional analysis; effect of driver perception and behavior; reducing collision risk through better design and consideration of human factors; design consistency and its relation to traffic safety; probabilistic highway design; interaction of road infrastructure and vehicle technologies; and pavement analysis and design. He served as a member of a number of committees of the Transportation Research Board and is currently a member of the Performance Effects of Geometric Design (AKD10) and the Co-Chair of the Subcommittee on Emerging and Crosscutting Topics (AKD10-2). He also served as the Chair of the Transportation Engineering Division of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering and as a member of the Transportation Association of Canada’s Chief Engineers Council. He received several research awards and honors including for example best paper by the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering and best presentation by a new author from the Canadian Technical Asphalt Association.

Sustainable Urban Freight Transport: The Case for E-Cargo Tricycles
Dr. Matthew J. Roorda, University of Toronto, Canada
Matthew Roorda is a Professor of Civil Engineering, has been faculty at the University of Toronto since 2005, and has worked in the transportation engineering profession since 1998. He is the Canada Research Chair in Freight Transportation and Logistics and leads the scientific advisory committee of the Smart Freight Centre. Dr. Roorda’s research interests include urban freight transportation, freight planning and operations, freight and passenger travel survey methods, city logistics, agent-based simulation, parking and curbside management, street and neighbourhood design, emissions analysis, activity-based travel demand modelling, and firm behaviour.

The Protective Role of Nutrition Against Environmental Pollutant Toxicities
Dr. Stan Kubow, McGill University, Canada
Stan Kubow is an Associate Professor at the School of Human Nutrition at McGill University and an honorary Associate Professor at University of Hong Kong and The University of Queensland. He has published more than 170 peer-reviewed research articles focused primarily on the impact of food components, diet, and nutrition in a variety of human diseases and environmental pollutant exposures. His research involves cell and tissue culture, animal models and clinical intervention trials to evaluates the health modulating properties of prebiotics and probiotics, peptides and a wide variety of phytochemicals against metabolic and neurological disorders and environmental pollutant toxicities. This research involves assessment of biomarkers of redox status, inflammation, metabolomics and the gut microbiome to explore mechanisms of action. He is ranked among the list that represents the top 2 percent of the most-cited scientists in the world according to the composite citation index released by Stanford University. He serves on the editorial boards of Microorganisms, Nutrients, and Foods and participates as a grant panel member of Tri-council funding agencies including Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). He is recruited regularly by industry to support nutritional, toxicological, biochemical research investigations via grant and research contract support.

Residual Fatigue & Static Strengths of Full-Scale Bridge Girders Strengthened In Shear with CFRP
Dr. Radouane Masmoudi, Université de Sherbrooke, Canada
Dr. Radhouane Masmoudi, Is a professor in the Civil & Building Engineering Department and former vice‐dean for research at the faculty of engineering, of the Université de Sherbrooke. He holds a US‐patent on high‐performance hybrid structures (US Patent No. 9,637,923, 2017). He is the founder and director of the High‐Performance Hybrid Structures Laboratory (HPHS), a member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), a voting member of the ACI‐440 Committee on Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) for Concrete and Chair of the ACI‐440D Committee: Research, Development and Applications of FRP Reinforcements for Concrete. He was the recipient of the Bazinet Award of Excellence in Teaching by the student’s association (AGEG), and the Jury Excellence Award of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction for the design of a huge architectural structure (L104m x H48m x W20 m) of the iconic‐420 million $‐Jacques‐Parizeau Building (formerly Caisse de dépôt et de placement building) in Montreal. His research contributions are mainly related to the design, testing, modeling and analysis of FRP reinforced concrete structures and structuralshapes made of fiber‐reinforced polymersfilled with reinforced concrete. He is the author and co‐author of more than 200 publications in peer‐reviewed journals and conferences. Prof. Masmoudi has been elected Fellow the Canadian Society of Civil Engineering ( FCSCE, 2022) and Fellow of the International Institute of FRP for Construction (FIIFC, 2023).

Multifunctional Metamaterials: A New Paradigm for Sustainable Energy Production
Dr. Abdolhamid Akbarzadeh, McGill University, Canada
Professor Hamid Akbarzadeh (PhD, PEng, CRC) is a Canada Research Chair in Multifunctional Metamaterials, an Associate Professor in Bio-inspired advanced materials and structures in the Bioresource Engineering Department, an Associate Member in Solid Mechanics in the Mechanical Engineering Department, and the Director of Advanced Multifunctional and Multiphysics Metamaterials Lab (AM3L) at McGill University, Montreal, Canada. He is also the recipient of CSME's I.W. Smith Award in 2023 from the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering. Professor Akbarzadeh joined McGill as an Assistant Professor in 2015 after two and half years of research on architected cellular solids as an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow in the Mechanical Engineering Departments at McGill University and the University of New Brunswick. He completed his PhD studies in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of New Brunswick in 2013 working on the multiphysics simulation of smart advanced materials. Prior to his PhD, he received his MSc in the Mechanical Engineering Department (Solid Mechanics) at Amirkabir University of Technology in 2009 and his BSc degree in the Mechanical Engineering Department (Solid Mechanics) at Isfahan University of Technology in 2007. Professor Akbarzadeh exploits Fundamentals of solid mechanics, Computational multiscale and multiphysics simulation, and Advanced manufacturing (3D printing and laser engraving) to develop the next generation of architected multifunctional materials and structures with unrivalled multiphysical properties. His research and training program at AM3L is aligned with systematic design, multiscale multiphysical modeling, and 3D printing of programmable and smart multifunctional metamaterials and metastructures. To date, his contributions have led 6 patent applications/reports of invention and 124 published articles in high-impact journals such as Advanced Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, Advanced Science, Nature Communications, Energy Storage Materials, Nano Energy, Carbon, and Acta Materialia.

Challenges and Perspectives of Deep Geological Repositories for Nuclear Energy
Dr. Mamadou Fall, University of Ottawa, Canada
Dr. Fall is a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Ottawa and the Chair of the Department of Civil Engineering. He holds the University Research Chair in Geotechnical Engineering for Net Zero Transitions. Ranked as one of the top one percent of scientists in the world by Elsevier Publisher in 2022, Professor Mamadou Fall is a leading researcher in Geotechnical Engineering, specializing in technologies that are critical for the construction and maintenance of sustainable structures and net zero transitions. His research has been adopted globally by industries, federal agencies, and institutions. His research contributions have garnered numerous awards, complementing his 300+ authored publications. Prof. Fall has held key leadership positions nationally and internationally, including Vice-President Technical of the Canadian Geotechnical Society, Director of the Ottawa-Carleton Institute of Environmental Engineering, Chair of the uOttawa Department of Civil Engineering, and Coordinator of the German Research Chair in Environmental Geosciences and Geotechnics. Prof. Fall is a member of several societies and has led or participated in the organization of numerous national and international workshops, seminars and conferences. He has been invited on several occasions as a keynote speaker or lecturer and to participate in various expert committees. He regularly serves as a consultant and reviewer for scientific committees, journals and funding agencies, both nationally and internationally.

Frontiers of Mathematical Modelling In Environmental Sciences: Social Dynamics, Tipping Points, And More
Dr. Chris Bauch, University of Waterloo, Canada
Chris Bauch is a Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Waterloo, Canada. He studies coupled human-environment systems in ecology, environmental sciences, epidemiology and climate science. Study systems include coupled social-climate systems, forest-grassland ecosystem mosaics, and vaccine scares, among others. He also conducts research on data-driven dynamical systems with a specific focus on hybridizing dynamical systems and deep learning to predict and characterize tipping points. His work has reached a wide public audience through the media, having been covered in The New York Times, Scientific American, USA Today, BBC News and other sources. His research has been published in journals such as Science and Proceedings of the National Academy of the USA, and has been funded by organizations such as the World Health Organization, the United States Food and Drug Administration, DARPA, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Investigation of the Collapse of the Arecibo Telescope in Puerto Rico
Dr. Habib Tabatabi, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, USA
Habib Tabatabai is a Professor of Structural Engineering and Director of the Structural Engineering Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. Prior to that, he was a Principal Structural Engineer with the CTL Group (1989-1999) and a bridge engineer with the Florida Department of Transportation (1987-1989). He has conducted research on topics related to bridges including reliability, durability, corrosion, and repair of structures, stay cable testing and condition assessments, jointless bridges, and survival analysis of structures. He is a licensed Structural Engineer (SE) and Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Illinois. He is a member of the PTI committee on cable-stayed bridges (DC-45) and has served on the ASCE Committee 19 (Structural Applications of Steel Cables for Buildings) (2005-2020). He also served as a member of a committee formed by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine to investigate the collapse of the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico.

Dr. Amarjeet Bassi, Western University, Canada
Dr. Amarjeet Bassi is Professor and Department Chair of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at Western University, His research program is in biochemical and bio-environmental engineering and resource recovery using microbial solutions. To-date, Bassi has trained over 100 HQP and his HQP are well placed and some are at senior positions in industry and academia. Amarjeet Bassi has published over 180 refereed publications, proceedings. He has co-edited two books on Smart Biosensor technologies and holds several patents . He has ~$1.5 million in research funding over the last 6 years from various programs including NSERC, OMAFRA, , industry and government. has demonstrated his experience in moving research innovation to practice. Technology patented in the Bassi lab is now under commercialization by Renix Inc. (London, Ontario). Dr. Bassi has previously served a 5 year term as Associate Dean (Undergraduate Programs) Faculty of Engineering at Western. Dr. Bassi is also the past President of the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering.
